3 Course Vegan Menu: Ocean House, Cape Cod
The Ocean House is a gorgeous restaurant overlooking the Nantucket Sound, where the view and the service make for an elegant and enjoyable dinning experience. This is a restaurant that I never expected to start serving a selection of vegan options. I am pleasantly surprised that, as a vegan, you can now enjoy a three course meal here!
Small Plates
I expected this to come out as a sort of bao bun but it is actually served bowl style, and the rice cakes are soft, chewy rounds mixed in with the veggies. You can see one of the cakes on the left side of the plate. I really enjoyed the flavor and composition of this dish, as it was both light and refreshing.
Although these were delicious, I'm not sure that they make for a satisfying stand alone appetizer. The Chinese eggplant is perfect if you want a light start to your meal, but just eating eggplant as a starter seems a bit boring to me. However, considering the flavor profiles, you could combine these with the Korean rice cakes for a delicious DIY Asian inspired entrée.
Spring rolls with ponzu? Enough said. I definitely would get these again.
The Korean fried broccoli takes the cake as it is not only the best, but the cheapest small plate. It is very unique and well executed. Both the sauce it's coated in and the basil ranch drizzle are to die for.
Entrées
The Impossible burger, served without cheese, is vegan by means of ingredients. It is also my understanding that you can order a cheese-less veggie pizza for a vegan entrée.
It is up to you whether you choose to support Impossible Foods or not based on the fact that they conducted one small research on rats to get the ingredient "heme" FDA approved. Learn more here & here.
For me, their selection of entrees is underwhelming in comparison to the small plates menu, but you could always get multiple small plates as your meal, and it's great that they have vegan options in the first place!
Dessert
Pictured above are a dairy-free raspberry sorbetto and the vegan bonbons. I think the sorbetto flavors rotate, but they usually have a few dairy-free fruit flavors.
If I had to choose I would prefer to order the bonbons as they are more interesting and unique. They are essentially just balls of vanilla ice cream dipped in dark chocolate. The texture of the bonbons reminded me a bit of mochi ice cream.
Overall I think The Ocean House has done a fabulous job of incorporating vegan items into their menu. Their ability to cater to a gluten-free audience as well makes for a very inclusive dining experience for people of different tastes and preferences. I hope that if you are ever in the area you will check it out!
